PORT CHESTER, NY — 'Tis the season for giving back to your community. There are a number of ways that you and your family can help out and help others. Every day through Christmas, Patch will be highlighting a way you can provide compassion and resources to those in need. Volunteer New York! makes it easy to find ways to help — through donations, supporting nonprofits and even volunteering at home. Today's opportunity is New Socks ad Underwear Drive for Children in Need. The Sharing Shelf needs volunteers to help provide clothing essentials — underwear and socks — to some of the 3,000 children and teens it serves each year. More than 60,000 children in Westchester live in low-income homes, with 36 percent of public school children qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. For these children, the Sharing Shelf said, new underwear and new socks are often financially out of reach. For more information, including instructions on how to order the requested items, go here.
