BRIDGEPORT, CT — Three people were injured, and four dogs killed, in a two-alarm fire early Wednesday at a property on Maplewood Avenue in Bridgeport, according to fire officials. The three victims were taken to Bridgeport Hospital following the 3 a.m. blaze; two of the victims suffered burns, while the third was being treated for smoke inhalation. Their conditions were not disclosed, and no other injuries were reported. News 12 Connecticut wrote about the deaths of the dogs. According to Scott Appleby, the city's Emergency Management director, the building in the 900 block of Maplewood Avenue houses commercial businesses on the first floor and apartments above. As firefighters arrived at the scene, they saw "heavy fire" pouring out of the second floor. "A second alarm was called due to the need for additional staffing," Appleby said in a statement, adding that the fire extended into the third floor. Personnel from the Fairfield Fire Department assisted with coverage in the city while Bridgeport firefighters battled the blaze. The fire was declared under control at 3:45 a.m., Appleby said. The fire is currently under investigation by the Bridgeport Fire Marshal's Office.
