CRANSTON, RI — The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management said it will reward kids who wear their life jackets when out boating this summer. Environmental police have once again teamed up with Del's Lemonade & Refreshments to offer free lemonade to kids who take their boating safety seriously. New this year, the Dunkin' Donuts at the Garden City Shopping Center in Cranston will also provide free doughnuts. Environmental Police Officers will give kids who are wearing their personal flotation device (PFD) a token for a free Del's lemonade or a gift card for a free doughnut. Although the Garden City location provided the gift cards, they are redeemable at any Dunkin' location. State officials said the program is an incentive to remind families the importance of wearing a properly fitted life jacket. According to U.S. Coast Guard data, 86 percent of reported drownings involve someone not wearing a life jacket.
