MONTGOMERY, IL — A Montgomery man has been charged with four felonies and one misdemeanor after attempting to kill his 65-year-old wife on May 1, according to police. Police responded to a residence in the 00 block of First Avenue, on Montgomery's east side, where they found a 65-year-old woman suffering from life-threatening injuries. The woman was taken to a local hospital, and police said she is now expected to survive. At the house, police also made contact with the woman's husband, identified as Gerald Schabb, who was taken to a hospital with minor self-inflicted injuries, according to officials. After an investigation, Montgomery detectives said they believe Schabb attempted to kill his wife before trying to take his own life. The Kane County State's Attorney's Office approved the following charges against the man: attempted first-degree murder, aggravated domestic battery, aggravated battery to a victim 60 years or older, aggravated battery with use of a deadly weapon, and induce attempt suicide provide assistance. The 71-year-old man was released from the hospital Tuesday and into the Montgomery police custody. He was then taken to the Kane County Judicial Center for processing, according to police.
