GRAYSLAKE, IL — A longtime firefighter in Grayslake has died at the age of 82. Gene Harmon worked as a volunteer firefighter/EMT for the Grayslake Fire Protection District from August 1963 to May 1986. He rose through the ranks becoming first assistant chief and was also one of the first members of the Lake County dive team. That same dive team now has more than 100 members from fire departments across Lake County, according to a post on the fire protection district's Facebook page. "He was a well respected professional and will be missed," according to the Facebook post. A wake will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. at Strang Funeral Chapel, 410 E. Belvidere Road in Grayslake. A fire department walk thru will be held at 6 p.m. A wake will run from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday with a funeral service starting at 12:30 p.m. at Strang Funeral Chapel. A procession will leave Strang Funeral Chapel at 1:30 p.m. and will proceed to Northshore Gardens of Memories, 1801 Green Bay Road in North Chicago.
