CALUMET CITY, IL — A 16-year-old died Wednesday after a crash involving a bus driver from Calumet City, according to police.
The incident occurred in Indiana's Vermillion County, near the downstate border with Illinois. The local sheriff's office received multiple 911 calls about the crash, which occurred when a 2005 BMW tried to turn north from State Road 234 to State Road 63 while a semitrailer was turning west onto State Road 234, authorities said.
The 16-year-old driver of the BMW was unable to see around the semi and drove into the southbound lanes of State Road 63, where his driver's side door was immediately hit by a transit bus driven by a 77-year-old Calumet City man, according to police.
The bus driver was not injured but the teen was ejected from the BMW and died after being taken to a local hospital, police said.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, the North Vermillion High School students and staff, and the entire community," the Vermillion County Sheriff's Office said in an email.
