Press release from UNC Greensboro Athletics: 5/11/2022 9:00:00 AM Story Links Tony and Yoda in Alabama at the Samford Softball Field on May 8. GREENSBORO, N.C. – A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away… Ok, maybe it wasn't far, far away…just maybe a few states away that junior Maycin Brown of the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team and her dad were traveling with her 14-under summer softball team and things just weren't going her way at the plate. Travel softball is a time of fun and honing in on your craft, to hopefully one day get the chance to be recruited by a college coach. Some days though, playing so many games, you can hit some slumps. "We had driven down to Florida and then went to Georgia and nothing was working at the plate," spoke Brown. "So, Friday night after my game, my dad (Tony) said we are not doing anything with or about softball, we are just going to go have fun somewhere." "I found an arcade called Bowlero near the hotel and we played for a couple of hours," remembered Tony Brown. "We stopped at a claw machine on our way out and Maycin took a chance and won Yoda." Tony and Yoda with their masks during last season at the UNCG Softball Stadium. Yoda is Tony's favorite character and the family is a huge Disney World and Star Wars fan, so it was the perfect ending to the night. When they went back to the hotel the Summerville, South Carolina native put it in her dad's backpack. The next day, Yoda started his journey to his first softball field. "Maycin went 6-for-8 for the rest of the weekend and we thought the only thing it could be was Yoda's magic," stated Tony. The rest is history. Yoda has now been to every game since high school, travel ball, and now college. He even made an appearance during Brown's freshman orientation (website story image). In total that is 11 states: Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, New Jersey, Colorado, Missouri, California, Florida, and Alabama. "It was more of a mutual thing to just have him with my dad at every game. He even sits in front of the TV and watches if my parents can't make the game," said Brown. Tony coached Brown in travel ball until she was about 12 and then was asked to help coach her high school team. When he wasn't coaching, he worked with Maycin on the side to help her get better. The starting third basemen for the Spartans, currently leads the team with a .335 batting average and has hit 53-for-158 at the plate, which is a season best. Her 37 runs scored and 13 doubles are also a season best, while also hitting nine homers. Brown has driven in 27 RBI and walked 27 times. Yesterday, Brown was named to the All-SoCon first team. She was named to the 2022 SoCon Preseason All-Conference first team. Brown earned SoCon Player of the Month in February this season, and was named SoCon Player of the Week and Louisville Slugger/NFCA Player of the Week in late March. "I think Yoda has brought a lot of his light force into every game that I play in," mentioned Brown. Yoda clipped to the fence to have perfect sight of the field behind Tony at the Samford Softball Field on May 8. "Even the other UNCG parents at the games make sure that Yoda is present and in the right spot watching the game," Tony remarked. "Recently, I got Yoda some sunglasses and a jacket. He even had a mask during COVID to be compliant with stadium requirements." Yoda will definitely be in attendance this week, as the Spartans have the number one seed in the 2022 SoCon Softball Championship, hosted by UNCG. UNCG is 37-16 overall and 14-2 in SoCon play. The tournament begins on Wednesday, May 11, and the Spartans face the winner of No. 4 Furman versus No. 5 Mercer on Thursday, May 12 at 12:30 p.m. "He brings a lot of good luck to our team and I can't wait to see the amount of force he will use on us going into the tournament play this week!"
