Press release from the Mecklenburg County Government: 5/6/2022 Description1 Senior citizens in eastern Mecklenburg County will have a new option for free, healthy meals and activities. Mecklenburg County's Senior Citizens Nutrition Program is opening a new congregate meal site at Albemarle Road Recreation Center, 5027 Idlewild Road North, Charlotte, NC 28227. Senior Nutrition will host a grand opening information and registration session at the new site on Tuesday, May 10, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The site will officially open on Tuesday, May 17. It will offer free meals, activities, and exercise on Tuesdays and Thursdays to Mecklenburg County adults aged 60+ and people with disabilities. The site will be open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. with meals served at 11:30 a.m. Reservations for meals are required by calling 704-336-3144. The Senior Citizens Nutrition Program (SCNP) provides nutrition, socialization, and wellness activities to individuals 60 years and older residing in Mecklenburg County. Commonly known as "Meals on Wheels," the program facilitates programming with the goal of maintaining independence and improving quality of life for our participants. The congregate meal service is offered at 14 locations and two "Grab and Go" locations across Mecklenburg County. It is open to: Mecklenburg County residents age 60+ and their spouses regardless of age when accompanying an eligible client. People under age 60 with disabilities and those who reside with and accompany eligible clients. People under age 60 with disabilities who reside in partner housing facilities, occupied primarily by older adults. Residents can complete the registration process by contacting or visiting their nearest location. More information is available by calling the Senior Nutrition information line at 704-336-3144. Transportation may be available through Mecklenburg County Transportation Services (MTS) by contacting Just 1 Call at 704-432-1111. Senior Nutrition also offers a home delivered meal service for those unable to attend congregate sites due to health conditions. There is no fee for any service. The program is supported by federal, state, and county funding, plus voluntary contributions from participants. To find out if they qualify for the home delivered meal program, residents can call 704-432-1111.
