Here are the top three stories today in Hoover: Two Hoover students have received the National Merit Scholarship. Riley G. Luthin, from Spain Park High School, and Sreekiran Nataraj, from Hoover High School, are among 34 Alabama students to receive the award. They have each received a scholarship of $2,500. Congratulations to all the recipients! (AL.com) On Tuesday night, the Hoover Board of Education approved the hiring of Simmons Middle School's new principal. Tarrant Elementary School Principal Walter Womack comes recommended by Superintendent Dee Fowler and will be the fifth person to serve as principal at Simmons since early 2019. According to the superintendent, Womack has been asked for a commitment to stay at least three to five years at Simmons, and Womack said he'll stay as long as the Hoover school district will let him. (Hoover Sun)A video uploaded to social media shows a Hoover man fighting with Gulf Shores police officers during a track tournament. On Friday, at the AHSAA State Outdoor Track and Field Championship, a mother and son brawled with officers after they approached Devin Wilson, of Hoover, for multiple complaints of being disorderly. Lieutenant Jason Woodruff with the police department said the officers only had a few scratches. Devin Wilson will be facing charges of second-degree assault and resisting arrest; his mother, Ykama Wilson, was charged with a misdemeanor.
