Description

The EPA's National Air Toxics Assessment (NATA) study found a high concentration of Ethylene Oxide in the Gurnee and Waukegan area. Ethylene Oxide (or EtO) is a human carcinogen that has been shown to cause cancers of the white blood cells, including non-Hodgkin lymphoma, myeloma, and lymphocytic leukemia. The EPA found that some Lake County residents are at an increased risk of cancer. Specifically, the EPA estimates that these levels of EtO emissions have a cancer risk of up to 200 in 1 million—six times the national average. The alleged source of the EtO contamination identified by the EPA is the Vantage plant in Gurnee as well as a Medline facility in Waukegan. Ethylene Oxide is used to manufacture chemicals for various industries including fragrances, shampoos, and cosmetics and is largely used in the medical industry to sterilize equipment and supplies. When EtO is produced or used, some of the gas is released into the air and water. Edelson PC is filing ethylene oxide exposure lawsuits on behalf of workers and nearby residents who have been diagnosed with cancer. Can Ethylene Oxide Cause Cancer? Which Cancers Are Associated With Ethylene Oxide Exposure? The types of cancer that can be associated with long-term exposure to ethylene oxide include: Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkins lymphoma; Llymphohematopoietic cancers; Hematopoietic cancers Leukemia Lymphocytic leukemia Pediatric lymphoma; Breast cancer; Prostate cancer; Pancreatic cancer; Ovarian cancer; Bladder cancer; Myeloma; and Brain, lung, or uterine tumors. Where Has Ethylene Oxide Been Detected in Lake County? The EPA's NATA study shows high concentrations of Ethylene Oxide in Lake County—especially in Gurnee, Waukegan, Park City, and North Chicago. The increased risk of cancer is greatest in the areas surrounding the Vantage plant in Gurnee and the Medline facility in Waukegan. Recognizing Ethylene Oxide Exposure Short term inhalation of high concentrations of EtO can cause headache, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, respiratory irritation (e.g., coughing, shortness of breath, wheezing) and, in some cases, vomiting and other types of gastrointestinal distress. The greatest risk is for people who live, have lived, or work near a facility releasing EtO into the air. Long-term exposure to Ethylene Oxide increases the risk of cancers of the white blood cells, including non-Hodgkin lymphoma, myeloma, and lymphocytic leukemia. Furthermore, brain tumors and lung tumors are among the types of tumors observed in individuals exposed to EtO. Studies also show that long-term exposure to Ethylene Oxide increases the risk of breast cancer in females. Additionally, high concentrations of EtO can cause an increased rate of miscarriages among females. Animal studies have shown that breathing Ethylene Oxide at high levels can interfere with their ability to reproduce and has caused developmental issues in their offsprings. Lake County EtO Monitoring Results Lake County Officials have released initial air monitoring test results of Ethylene Oxide. Parts of Lake County have registered EtO concentrations as high as 10 μg/m3 and the presence of EtO has been detected as far as 4 miles away from the alleged source of EtO emission sites. For the full test results, please visit the Lake County website.
