NEW YORK CITY — New York City's healthcare workers continue to fight a long hard battle as the coronavirus pandemic continues, but a new ranking shows some hospitals are faring far better than others. A national ranking of patient safety in U.S. hospitals, released this week by the Leapfrog Group, shows the pandemic reversed years of progress in patient safety, the healthcare watch dog nonprofit said. "The health care workforce has faced unprecedented levels of pressure during the pandemic," Leapfrog Group president and CEO Leah Binder said in a news release. "As a result, patients' experience with their care appears to have suffered." Hospitals received letter grades based on data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and Leapfrog's Hospital Survey, according to a press release. Out of the 44 hospitals graded in New York City, six received As, two earned Bs, 22 got Cs and 14 were given Ds, according to the ranking. Nearly a quarter of Manhattan's 13 graded hospitals earned top marks, with four hospitals receiving A grades, one a B, six a C and two a D. Seven Brooklyn hospitals received D grades, four got Cs, one got a B and another lone hospital got an A, the list shows. Queens hospitals did marginally better with one A, six Cs and one D. Leapfrog's panel of medical experts considered 30 signs of patient safety — such as postoperative sepsis, blood leakage and kidney injury — when making their deliberations, according to a press release. Each sign was weighted by evidence, opportunity for improvement and patient impact. Leapfrog found 33 percent of hospitals received an A, 24 percent received a B, 36 percent received a C and 7 percent received a D, and less than 1 percent received an F. North Carolina, Virginia, Utah, Colorado, and Michigan had the highest number of A grade hospitals while Wyoming, West Virginia, the District of Columbia and North Dakota had none. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade methodology has been peer-reviewed and published in the Journal of Patient Safety. The full methodology for the 2022 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is available online.
