NEW YORK CITY — A search is underway for a man who killed a civilian NYPD worker during a domestic violence incident in Queens and shot a neighbor who tried to help, police said.
The off-duty worker — a 51-year-old woman — died from a single gunshot wound to the head Monday, said Julie Morrill, the commanding officer of Queens North detectives.
Another woman, 48, who lived in the same building on Fresh Pond Road near Palmetto Street, is in critical but stable condition after she suffered two gunshot wounds to her chest, Morrill said.
"There has been no arrest made as yet, but NYPD detectives are currently seeking the suspect," she said.
The shooting stemmed from a "domestic incident" about 8:15 a.m. between the woman and a man, 55, in her third-floor apartment, Morril said. The woman's neighbor, who lives on the second floor, tried to "check in" during the incident but was also shot by the man, she said.
The man apparently chased the neighbor through the hallway and a stairwell, as police found a trail of shell casings in both, Morrill said.
The shooter ran away before police arrived to find the two women critically injured, Morrill said.
The NYPD worker was rushed to a nearby hospital, but doctors pronounced her deceased at 11:22 a.m., Morrill said. She said the victim's neighbor remains hospitalized.
Police are still investigating the shooting, as well as hunting for the man they believe carried out, Morrill said. She said investigators don't know what exactly prompted the shooting, and that there were no past domestic incidents between the NYPD worker and the man.
None, at least, until now.
"This appears to be a domestic violence incident between the male suspect and the female victim," Morrill said.
