SHOREWOOD, WI — A Shorewood teacher learned on Friday she was selected to be a 2023 Wisconsin Teacher of the Year during a surprise visit from State Superintendent Jill Underly, according to a news release from the Department of Public Instruction.
Sarah Kopplin, a teacher at Shorewood Intermediate School, was one of five people who are being selected for the program, the DPI news release said. The honor is given annually to represent elementary schools, middle schools, high schools and special services. Each of the five who are selected as a Teacher of the Year will also be interviewed for a chance to represent the Badger State in the CCSSO National Teacher of the Year program.
Kopplin is passionate about social studies, and the DPI news release said she finds innovative, resourceful ways to provide opportunities for all students. She also serves on district-level planning groups.
"Through her ability of creating authentic learning opportunities, students in her class leverage their leadership, voice, and choice to guide their individual learning experiences," the DPI news release said.
One recent initiative that Kopplin was a part of was when a student environmental club that she serves as a staff advisor for managed to introduce composting to her school's lunchroom, Patch reported.
