Press release from Belmont Public Schools: May 9, 2022 The Foundation for Belmont Education would like to thank EVERYONE who participated in our Spring events! What a productive and fabulous couple of months it has been – just look at our total Spring Events numbers! The FBE is extremely grateful – these events could not happen without your support. We are delighted to announce that the online auction, which had 134 donations and 848 bids, raised $20,000 for the FBE! We do hope the successful bidders thoroughly enjoy their auction items. Thank you to everyone who placed a bid, and to the generous supporters who donated auction items. THANK YOU to all 723 spellers at this year's BEE! It was so much fun to see all the spellers and their creative team attire at an in-person BEE again. For many years now, the BEE has been a pinnacle event for the students of Belmont, bringing our community together, celebrating our children and inspiring learning. This year's BEE raised an amazing $22,000+, thank you to all the families who participated is this community event, and to our sponsors for making it possible! Visit fbe-belmont.org/bee to enjoy some excellent photographs of this fun day. Congratulations to this year's BEE winners, Team Double HD, with the winning word Metamorphosis. Photographed with our Honeycomb sponsor Carolyn Boyle of Gibson Sotheby's International Realty. This year's second place team were the Mischievous Bee Organization. This is just the best fundraiser – not only does it raise essentials funds for the Belmont Public Schools, but it gives back by spreading a little happiness around the Belmont community. This year we delivered 882 potted daffodils with the help of 40 volunteers, and raised $12,000! Thank you to everyone who took part, to Jayne's Flowers for partnering with us again, to our volunteers who tirelessly labeled and delivered the daffodils, and to everyone who chose to spread a little sunshine! We hope you enjoyed the wonderful Award Ceremony at Belmont High School to celebrate this year's recipients of the Outstanding Teacher Awards and the S. Warren Farrell Award for Excellence. Thank you to Belmont Savings Bank Foundation for sponsoring the OTA, and to you for taking the time to nominate teachers and be part of this special event. From left to right: S. Warren Farrell, Victoria O'Regan, Brenda Maurao, Nikolaus vonHuene, Karla Koza, Jonathan Marks, Isaac Taylor, Ezra Flam, Lauren Chancey, Anita Mecklenburg, Abbie Dufault, Julie Babson, Jessica Endres, and Heidi Paisner-Roffman The FBE provides funding for various grant programs within the Belmont Public Schools. These awards have funded new initiatives, staff development projects, and other enrichment activities that could not be included in the regular school budget. From Ms. Zhang, Chinese Teacher, Chenery Middle School: In 8th grade Chinese class, students learned the concept of Chinese calligraphy both in March and April. Students learned how to correctly hold the brush, the basic strokes, and the stroke order rules. In last Friday's class, I introduced two famous ancient poems from the Tang dynasty. Students then went outside to write one of the poems on the floor with the floor calligraphy brush. Our students were excited by these hands-on experiences to learn how to write Chinese characters through artistic practices and brush stroke techniques. We truly appreciate FBE's generous support for purchasing calligraphy brush writing sets so students can have the engaging, unique opportunities to further develop insight into the nature of Chinese language and culture. We will have more calligraphy lessons to come in May and June. This press release was produced by Belmont Public Schools. The views expressed here are the author's own.
