NEWARK, NJ — Voters in Newark went to the polls on Tuesday to choose a mayor and several members of the city council in the 2022 nonpartisan municipal election. >> Get local election updates delivered to your inbox. Sign up for Patch email newsletters. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka faced a challenge from longtime educator Sheila Montague. Newark voters were also asked to cast ballots for at-large and ward council members (see the list below). Here are the uncertified results for mayor as of 10:03 p.m. on Tuesday, according to the Essex County Clerk's Office. Check back for updates. MAYOR (Vote for one) With 158 of 168 districts reported, Baraka had a large lead over Montague: Sheila Montague – 2,711 votes (17.23%)Ras Baraka – 13,025 votes (82.77%) AT LARGE (Vote for four) Incumbent at-large council members C. Lawrence Crump, Carlos Gonzalez and Luis Quintana will be joined by Louise Scott-Rountree. They ran unopposed for four at-large seats. With 158 of 168 districts reported, here are the uncertified results: Luis Quintana – 11,598 votes (27.74%)Louise Scott-Rountree – 9,885 votes (23.64%)Carlos Gonzalez – 9,751 votes (23.32%)C. Lawrence Crump – 10,581 votes (25.3%) NORTH WARD (Vote for one) North Ward council member Anibal Ramos Jr. ran unopposed for re-election. With 31 of 33 districts reported, here are the uncertified results: Anibal Ramos Jr. - 2,537 votes (100%) SOUTH WARD (Vote for one) In the city's South Ward, six candidates competed to replace John Sharpe James, who is not running for re-election. The candidates were: Terrance Bankston, Christina Cherry, Patrick Council, Douglas Freeman, Trenton Jones and Cynthia Truitt-Rease. With 37 of 42 districts reported, Council had a large lead. Here are the uncertified results: Christina Cherry - 361 votes (10.2%)Patrick Council - 1,617 votes (45.7%)Terrance Bankston - 626 votes (17.69%)Trenton Jones - 556 votes (15.72%)Cynthia Truitt-Rease - 133 votes (3.76%)Douglas Freeman - 245 votes (6.92%) EAST WARD (Vote for one) Four candidates sought to replace Augusto Amador in the city's East Ward, who is not running for re-election: Anthony Campos, Jonathan Seabra, Michael Silva and Louis Weber. With 23 of 23 districts reported, Silva held a slight lead over Campos at the front of the field. Here are the uncertified results: Michael Silva - 1,039 votes (35.94%)Anthony Campos - 989 votes (34.21%)Jonathan Seabra - 453 votes (15.67%)Louis Weber - 410 votes (14.18%) WEST WARD (Vote for one) In the city's West Ward, there were six candidates seeking to replace Joseph McCallum, who is not running for re-election. McCallum pleaded guilty in connection with a bribery and kickback scheme in March. The candidates were: Lyndon Brown, Oscar James II, Lavita Johnson, Dupre Kelly, Michelle Lyn Middleton, and Chigozie Onyema. With 35 of 37 districts reported, Kelly was at the front of the pack. Here are the uncertified results: Oscar James II - 460 votes (13.08%)Lyndon Brown - 250 votes (7.11%)Lavita Johnson - 344 votes (9.78%)Dupre Kelly - 1,333 votes (37.89%)Chigozie Onyema - 1,049 votes (29.82%)Michelle Lyn Middleton - 82 votes (2.33%) CENTRAL WARD (Vote for One) Incumbent councilwoman LaMonica McIver faced a challenge from Shawn McCray in the city's Central Ward. With 32 of 33 districts reported, McIver held a significant lead.
