PATCHOGUE, NY — A Patchogue man was injured after accidentally shooting himself with an illegally possessed handgun on Tuesday, according to Suffolk police. The man was cleaning his gun at his home when he accidentally shot himself in the hand on at 2:50 p.m., police said. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries. Investigators found that the man did not legally own the gun, police said. The man was charged with criminal possession of a firearm. He was later taken to Stony Brook for evaluation.
