Col. Josiah Smith Chapter daughters participated in the Wreaths Across America in the Calverton National Cemetery on December 19, 2020. The Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.) Captain Austin Roe Society also sponsored wreaths.Geri Gendron and her sister Mary laid wreaths for both of their Grandfathers. Joan Nathan laid a wreath for Medford Veteran Louis Travan, husband of Joan Travan. Regent Heidi Nathan-Barry and her family sponsored a wreath for Medford Veteran John Barry, father of Army Veteran Brian Barry. The chapter sponsored many other wreaths which were place by Veterans who ran this event this year due to the pandemic. Calverton National Cemetery is a United States Military Cemetery for veterans of the armed services and their wives. Burial in a national cemetery is open to all members of the armed forces who have met a minimum active duty service requirement and were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable. A Veteran's spouse, widow or widower, minor dependent children, andunder certain conditions, unmarried adult children with disabilities may also be eligible for burial. The Department of Defense (DOD) is responsible for providing military funeral honors. "Honoring Those Who Served" is the title of the DOD program for providing dignified military funeral honors to Veterans who have defended our nation.Upon the family's request, Public Law 106-65 requires that every eligible Veteran receive a military funeral honors ceremony, to include folding and presenting the United States burial flag and the playing of Taps.
