ELMHURST, IL – The number of coronavirus cases at Elmhurst School District 205 doubled in a week, according to the latest report. As of Friday, the district reported 114 cases among students, or 1.4 percent. That was up from 70 the previous week. A month ago, the number was 34. Even at the current levels, less than 2 percent of students are reported as having the virus. At York High School, with about 2,800 students, 47 of them as of Friday had tested positive for the coronavirus. That nearly doubled the previous week's number. Among employees, 21 had the coronavirus as of Friday, up from 16 the week before. The district dropped its mask mandate in early February. Since the beginning of the school year, the district has recorded 1,850 coronavirus cases among students and staff. As of last Wednesday, Elmhurst Hospital reported a dozen patients testing positive for the coronavirus. That's down from a record high of 105 in January. In Elmhurst, the number of coronavirus cases has generally increased in the last few weeks. Last week, 179 cases were reported in the city, according to the DuPage County Health Department. That works out to one new case for every 260 people in town. The city reached a weekly high of 599 in January.
