Press release from San Diego County Sheriff's Department: May 8, 2022 On Sunday afternoon, around 4:00 pm on May 8th, Deputies from the North Coastal Sheriff's Station, and the Encinitas Fire Department responded to a traffic collision involving a vehicle and pedestrian on Piraeus Street near Normandy Road. A vehicle stopped in the south bound bicycle lane of Piraeus Street. A male passenger in the vehicle exited and crossed over the south and north bound lanes onto the east shoulder of Piraeus Street to retrieve a flower. He then moved back west from the shoulder into the north bound lane of traffic. A vehicle traveling north bound on Piraeus Street struck the male. The male sustained major injuries and was transported to Scripps La Jolla Hospital. While at Scripps La Jolla Hospital, the male was pronounced deceased. The driver of the vehicle was not injured. At this time, alcohol and/or drugs are not a factor in the collision. The North Coastal Sheriff's Traffic Division is on scene and handling the investigation.
