Tucson Police ID Victim Who Died After Vehicle-Pedestrian Collision

TUCSON, AZ —The Tucson Police Department on Tuesday revealed the name of the male victim who died over the weekend from injuries sustained in a vehicle-pedestrian collision last week. Evander Aaron Nelson, 28, died Saturday due to injuries he suffered during the Wednesday collision, according to the Office of the Medical Examiner (OME). Three days earlier, Tucson fire personnel had transported Nelson from the scene of the collision — 300 block of E. 22nd Street —to St. Joseph's Hospital with life-threatening injuries, the TPD said. According to police reports, just after 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, the victim was seen standing in the median lane of westbound 22nd Street, approximately 50 feet west of a marked crosswalk. During that time, police said a blue 2007 Nissan Titan traveling westbound on 22nd Street stuck the victim. According to police, the driver of the Nissan stopped after the collision and cooperated with the investigation. The driver was evaluated for impairment by an officer from the TPD's DUI Unit, and it was determined that the driver was not impaired at the time of the collision, police said. The TPD said mid-block crossing by the pedestrian was the major contributing factor in the fatal vehicle-pedestrian collision.
