Long-Awaited Elevator Coming To Park Slope's Seventh Ave Station

PARK SLOPE, BROOKLYN — Park Slopers fighting a years-long battle to get an elevator at Seventh Avenue will finally get their way. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced Wednesday that the Seventh Avenue/Ninth Street F and G station will be among eight subway stops slated for new elevators in its latest round of accessibility improvements for the city's subway system. The Park Slope stop will get three elevators under the plan, which, because of an existing federal grant, will go forward despite a pause on many of the MTA's other improvement projects during the coronavirus crisis. "Our commitment to improving accessibility remains a priority despite the difficult financial situation the MTA is facing," said Janno Lieber, president of MTA Construction & Development. "These improvements are great news for our customers and reflect Construction & Development's innovative strategies to better deliver projects faster and more efficiently than ever before — using design build project delivery, incentives for cutting schedules, and packaging multiple ADA stations into more efficient bundles." The three new lifts will come after years of Brooklynites advocating for an elevator at the Seventh Avenue station, which sits near Brooklyn Methodist Hospital and the Park Slope Center for Successful Aging. Seniors and others who need an elevator to use the subway typically were forced to go to the F and G stop at Church Avenue or head to Atlantic Terminal. The new upgrades will include two other Brooklyn stations, both in Williamsburg. The MTA did not specify when work would begin on the new elevators.
