3 Brooklyn Schools Named National Blue Ribbon Winners

BROOKLYN, NY — Three Brooklyn schools have earned spots on the the U.S. Department of Education's latest list of National Blue Ribbon Schools. P.S. 134 in Kensington, P.S. 101 Verrazzano Elementary School in Gravesend and Williamsburg High School for architecture and design were among 367 schools nationwide that made the cut, U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos announced last week. Only six schools total from New York City made the list, including the three in Brooklyn, two in Queens and one in Staten Island, according to the list. P.S. 134 was also on the Blue Ribbon list in 2006. Now in its 38th year, the award program "affirms the hard work of students, educators, families, and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging content," according to a news release. More than 9,000 schools across the country have been recognized by the National Blue Ribbon Schools program, with some schools winning multiple awards. Schools are eligible for nomination after five years. "Congratulations to this year's National Blue Ribbon School awardees," DeVos said in a statement. "It's a privilege to recognize the extraordinary work you do to meet students' needs and prepare them for successful careers and meaningful lives." Maya Kaufman contributed to this report.
