NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The New England Thruway was a mess this weekend and the damage caused by an early morning accident might not be over. The New Rochelle Fire Department (NRFD) responded early Saturday morning, around 6:30 a.m., to an accident on I-95 between a FedEx tractor trailer and a car. The car passenger was injured and transported to an area hospital by ambulance. No other injuries were reported. A second FedEx truck stopped to assist but was then unable to move due to fuel covering the roadway, making it slick. The right lane re-opened around an hour later but traffic was stop-and-go with several delays for much of the morning. The New York State Police said that 4-mile traffic delays existed. The fire department said that a saddle tank from the first truck ruptured and sent approximately 200 gallons of fuel onto the roadway and into storm drains along I-95. The storm drains come out along the shoreline, by Pelham Road near Glen Island and by Evans St. off Main St., near the Landscape Depot and the old Nelstad concrete plant, adjacent to Sutton Manor Rd. The New Rochelle Police Department Harbor Unit checked the shoreline and noted that there was fuel by Evans St. The NRFD put out floating booms to help contain the fuel until it was removed. The U.S. Coast Guard worked with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation to get the fuel cleaned up. The fire department said that since the fuel spill occurred at shift change, it was a good 2-squad/3-squad effort, along with the NRPD Harbor Unit and the Traffic Division to get things under control.
