LAKEWOOD, CO — Vicente Enrique Orozco, 22, was sentenced Friday to two consecutive life sentences by the First Judicial District Court after being convicted of a 2019 double murder, according to the District Attorney's office. He was found guilty of two counts of murder in the first degree, one count of felony murder and two counts of aggravated robbery by a jury on March 10.
The families of Orozco's victims — 61-year-old Stevan Sandvick and 19-year-old Ivan Rodriguez Rivera — addressed the court, according to the District Attorney's office.
"Rodriguez Rivera was described as a 'beautiful kid' with a bright future ahead of him, and Sandvick was described as a father and husband that will be missed very much," a news release said.
Police found Rodriguez Rivera with multiple stab wounds in the early morning of Aug. 15, 2019, at Belmar Park in Lakewood, according to the news release. He had been playing soccer with a friend in the park when he was attacked.
Later the same morning, a witness found Sandvick's body near the Fallen Firefighters Memorial in the park, according to the news release. He had also suffered multiple stab wounds.
Rodriguez Rivera died several days after the attack, and Sandvick was pronounced dead on the scene.
Through an anonymous tip, police were able to identify Orozco, who was taken into custody on Aug. 21, 2019, according to the news release.
"Today we see justice for the tragedy that took two innocent, random victims from the years ahead of them, their community, and their families," said Adam Hepp, senior deputy district attorney. "We are grateful for the courageous and thorough efforts of law enforcement, and we thank Ivan and Stevan's families for their patience, their strength, and their undaunted courage throughout this process."
