FREMONT, CA — To mark National Nurses Week, which runs through May 12, the Fremont Police Department on Friday presented Teddy bears as a show of gratitude to two local hospitals — Washington Hospital and Kaiser Permanente Fremont Medical Center.
"To the nurses and staff at Washington Hospital and Kaiser Fremont (and throughout the country), thank you for your service," the department said.
The stuffed bears, made from Fremont PD uniforms, included a quote stitched on the paws: "Because cops need heroes, too."
A week set aside annually to commend the dedication and work of nurses, National Nurses Week begins May 6 and ends on May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, a British nurse and healthcare reformer from the late 1800s, often considered the founder of modern nursing.
