ENCINITAS, CA — A man who crossed a street to pick a flower was hit and killed by a vehicle on Mother's Day in San Diego's North County. The crash happened around 4 p.m. Sunday on Piraeus Street near Normandy Road in Encinitas, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. A vehicle stopped in the southbound bicycle lane of Piraeus Street and a male passenger got out, sheriff's Sgt. William Clem said. The man crossed over the southbound and northbound lanes and onto the east shoulder to pick a flower. A vehicle heading north on Piraeus Street hit him. The man was taken to Scripps La Jolla Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Clem said. The driver of the vehicle was not injured. "At this time, alcohol and/or drugs are not a factor in the collision," Clem said. Anyone with information about the crash was asked to call the Encinitas Traffic Division at 760-966-3500.
