SMITHTOWN, NY — Curious about what's going on in your neighborhood? Check out the recent crimes reported in the area between May 1 and May 7. The Suffolk County Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt. May 7: Identity theft (first-degree) was reported on Ashleigh Drive in St. James from May 5 at 12:30 p.m. Someone opened a bank account in someone else's name and transferred money from their personal account into the new, fraudulent account, police said.May 6: Grand larceny (third-degree) was reported on Drew Drive in St. James from May 5 at 8 a.m. A person received a call that their son had been arrested and was in need of bail money, police said. The person was tricked into mailing a large sum of cash to an out-of-state address, police said.May 5: Grand larceny (third-degree) was reported on Mobrey Lane in Smithtown from May 4 at noon. Someone reported someone else took a check they had written out and altered the amount before cashing it, police said.May 1: Grand larceny (fourth-degree) was reported on Middle Country Road in St. James at noon. Someone went into a locked vehicle and stole cash, credit cards and a cell phone, police said.
