Rocco is a 3 year old Great Pyrenees. He’s very affectionate, playful, loves kids, and gets along very well with other dogs. He has been exposed to poultry, but not yet given free roam with them to further that training. He was given as a gift to an older couple who couldn’t at all provide the space, care, or training necessary for his breed. He came to live with us at 18 months old and we have been working with him since. Unfortunately, training has proven difficult due to his upbringing. He has a tendency to be flighty, so he would do best with more space to roam than we currently have and livestock to be trained for or even just a good-sized fenced yard. He is pretty laid back in the house, but he does try to steal people-food if your back is turned (regardless of whether or not he’s even hungry). We believe he was neutered a bit too early as he likes to think he has something to offer female dogs (if you know what I mean) and does, on rare occasion, try to mark his territory, but is otherwise pretty well house-broke. He was also shaved past his undercoat more than once before he came to us. He doesn’t handle heat well because of that and, despite conditioning and regular brushings, it grew back in mats. I have attempted trimming his hair back down closer to his undercoat to address the mats more than a few times, but it didn’t help and what little it did, it didn’t last a day. Of course, he didn’t have an actual yard before, so he really enjoys rolling in the dirt and grass, which doesn’t help his coat. He is quite the shedder as well, but that should come as no surprise with his breed. Unfortunately due to circumstances, I no longer have the time nor am I physically capable of continuing to care for, train, and maintain him anymore. Cleaning up after his hair has also become exceedingly difficult for me. He is a very sweet boy and we believe he has much more potential as an LGD if given more time and work.
