NEW ROCHELLE, NY — All schools in the City School District of New Rochelle will remain on all-remote learning through Wednesday, Dec. 9. An email from interim Superintendent Alex Marrero Wednesday morning said elementary and middle school students will return after that to a hybrid model in two phases. On Dec. 10, pre-kindergarten through grade three will return to hybrid. Learning hubs will resume at all sites as well. On Jan 4, grades four through eight will return to hybrid. Marrero said New Rochelle High School will remain on remote learning until further notice. Special education students who have been receiving in-person education will continue to do so. "School buildings had been tentatively scheduled to reopen to a hybrid model of learning this Friday, Dec. 4, after state-designated yellow zones went into effect on Nov. 23," Marrero said. "However, updated guidance from the New York State Department of Health that took the Thanksgiving break into account grants us an extension until Dec 9 to meet the requirement to test 20 percent of onsite students, teachers and staff," he said. This latest information comes after Marrero sent an email Tuesday evening that said a staff member at Trinity Elementary School tested positive for the new coronavirus after taking a rapid results test. He said the person was in contact with at least six other staff members at the school, none of whom were teachers or students. All impacted staff members are required to quarantine, and Principal Michael Hilderbrand and a staff tracking nurse are conducting contact tracing. The person who tested positive was one of the 20 percent of in-school population randomly selected for testing required under the yellow-zone regulations.
