NEW ROCHELLE, NY — New Rochelle police had to rescue a woman from an apartment bedroom because five pit bull dogs were fighting. New Rochelle police said they were called shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday to a home on First Street for a report of a dog-biting incident. Officers said they found a 25-year-old man — the owner of the dogs — with bite wounds on his right hand and both legs. The man told the police that he and his girlfriend, who was still inside the home, own the five dogs and that one of the animals was fighting the others. He was bitten, he said, when he tried separating the dogs. Before he got out of the building, the man said he managed to get his girlfriend out of harm's way inside one of the bedrooms. Officers climbed up a fire escape, got a side window open and slipped a noose around one of the dogs. That enabled the woman to escape through a front window where police had set up a ladder for her to climb down. The injured man was taken to New Rochelle Montefiore Hospital. Police said the humane society was notified and was able to get control of all five of the dogs. The animals were taken away to be placed in confinement for 10 days, police said.
