NEW HYDE PARK, NY—In the "age of the coronavirus," doctors are finding creative ways to still treat patients without compromising safety. One such healthcare provider is Dr. Perry Frankel, a New Hyde Park cardiologist. He is using a 40-foot bus as a mobile medical unit to reach patients who may be hesitant to stray too far from home these days. "We have been traveling around the state to administer cardiovascular tests and offering telemedicine calls to support patients during this challenging time," Dr. Frankel said in a recent Facebook post. In order to promote social distancing and minimize the spread of the coronavirus, Frankel's Advanced Cardiovascular Diagnostics team will come to the patient. From the comfort of the bus, his team can perform stress tests, lab work, blood pressure readings and electrocardiograms. "Our mobile office design allows us to bring our entire team of trained staff and professionals with us," Frankel said via social media. "Our unit can check multiple patients at once while still abiding by the social distancing guidelines." According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular diseases claim more lives each year than all forms of cancer and chronic lower respiratory disease combined. While lifestyle and genetics can play a big factor, stress can, too. "Everyone is worried about coronavirus, but heart attacks remain the No. 1 cause of death in America. A heart attack occurs in the U.S. every 42 seconds. Those people can't wait for coronavirus," Frankel told LongIsland.com. One patient who recently took advantage of Frankel's service is Gildharry Dinanathsingh, 71, He told Newsday that he wanted to have an EKG and a blood pressure reading since he has coronary artery disease. "It was very convenient and I didn't have to go into an office with other people," he told the newspaper. "It was a great opportunity to get checked out and now I know everything is OK."
