Understanding the style and eras of NKY houses will give you insight into the growth and development of our region.
Many of the earliest architect-designed houses to be built in northern Kentucky were the homes of wealthy people. Think of the grand Federal Style summer home built for Thomas D. Carneal on his property in Ludlow, and the elegant Greek Revival mansion built for Newport’s James Taylor overlooking the river (all still standing). As years passed, northern Kentucky gained wealth from industry and population from immigration, reshaping its cities. Large numbers of modest homes on small lots were built to house the new arrivals, including tenements, duplexes and shotgun houses, while captains of industry overlooked the new neighborhoods from their hilltops. By the end of the century, it also became more common for architects and builders to design more modest house types such as bungalow, Cape Cod and American Foursquare residences, usually on small lots. As more people of different moved into NKY cities, the house types built for them became more diverse, and so did the neighborhoods they lived in.
