Press release from Herricks Public Schools: September 10, 2020 Herricks students and staff members had a joyful return to school from Sept. 2-4,when doors opened for a staggered schedule of orientations. Masks could not hide theexcitement that was present as those in the district came together and greeted one another.Sept. 8 will mark the first full day of school and principals and teachers at each buildinghave been enthusiastic and dedicated to a smooth reopening. The district has been diligent about implementing health and safety protocols, andthese days served as opportunities for everyone to grow more familiar with socialdistancing measures, proper mask wearing, arrival and dismissal procedures and healthscreenings. Students' temperatures are taken before they are permitted in the buildingsand different entry points prevent crowding at doorways. Additionally, families arerequired to fill out medical surveys each morning using an app in order to be cleared forattendance. Buses are carrying fewer passengers in accordance with distancing requirements,and as soon as students exit them, custodial staff members step on board and sanitize thevehicles thoroughly. The buses undergo even deeper cleaning routines upon their return tothe transportation station. In the classrooms, desks are spaced at least six feet apart. Throughout the schoolday students are given mask breaks and opportunities to enjoy the fresh air outside whenpossible. "We have been getting our students situated and making sure everyone understandsthe new protocols and practices," said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Fino Celano. "A newyear of learning has commenced, and the district looks forward to sharing many examplesof enriching programs, innovative lessons and student achievements."
