HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Polls closed at 9 p.m. in Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Ulster and Westchester counties, and election workers began counting votes cast since Oct. 24, when early voting began for the first time in New York for a presidential race. Registered voters in the Hudson Valley have been voting for weeks for president and vice president, United States senator, state Supreme Court Justices and representatives to U.S. Congress, state Senate, state Assembly, and state judges. "I have been so encouraged by the turn-out," New York's Senate Majority Leader, Andrea Stewart-Cousins told Patch. Stewart-Cousins was unopposed in her re-election bid in District 35 covering Yonkers, Hastings, Dobbs, Irvington, Hartsdale, Scarsdale and part of New Rochelle. It's not just the top of the ballot that's been contentious. In the Hudson Valley, there were hard-fought races and multiple candidates in all four congressional districts. Some of the state assembly and senate seats were hotly contested. For example, despite trailing at midnight in the 38th New York State Senate District, Democratic candidate Elijah Reichlin-Melnick said that he expects to win the race once all the absentee votes are counted. With nearly all Election Day and early votes counted, Reichlin-Melnick trailed Republican Bill Weber by 3,300 votes. However, there are nearly 40,000 outstanding absentee ballots, with Democratic ballots outnumbering Republican ballots by more than 3-to-1, he said in a news release. Did you experience problems at the polls in the Hudson Valley? Long lines? Trouble finding your polling place? Whatever it is, we want to know, so tell us in the comments.
