An ostomate should know the importance of care of stoma and skin around the opening in the belly wall. Every ostomy patient, either with an ileostomy, colostomy, or urostomy, does care for entire health and stoma. Here are a few instructions for the ileostomy patients for the care of the opening and skin around it. Moreover, before adopting any point for the first time, consult your WOC nurse and doctor for detailed review and protection. Products and Pouching System for Ileostomy Patients The first and foremost product an ileostomy uses is the pouching system. A bag or sack is a device used to collect the waste content from the stoma. Thus, this would be the vigilant point regarding the care of your stoma and skin. If you use a wrong and unappropriate pouching system for your stoma, it can ruin your internal organ, ileum, opening, and peristomal skin. Thus, before choosing a pouching system for your ileostomy, you should know the size, shape, and fragility of your stoma. You should ask your medical specialist regarding the selection of the ostomy bag and other products. Moreover, always try to wear a filter pouch that can release gas slowly and eliminate odor. Furthermore, some ileostomy persons experience diarrhea; therefore, seek the drainable pouching system. This appliance can bring ease in an ileostomy's life because of the easy emptying and cleaning. Moreover, use a stoma bag that has an opening of 1/8 inches larger than your stoma size. Moreover, do not choose other products like flanges, skin barrier, clips, adhesive, rings, strips, and paste that irritate your peristomal skin and stoma. You will know the nature and sensitivity of your peristomal skin, while you are in hospital. Thus, once you are discharged, buy the ostomy pouching system and other products that are suitable for your abdominal opening and skin around it. Protection Skin Around the Stoma Many ileostomy patients go through leakage trouble. This can damage the tissues of skin around the stoma. Because of the opening, the skin around it gets sensitive, and when waste comes out of the pouch, it damages the skin. Therefore, the vital duty of an ileostomy patient is to use the right size pouching system. A bag should not leak. Ileostomates often suffer from diarrhea and unpredictable bowel movements; therefore, they should wear drainable pouches, pouch clips, and stoma belts. Such products control the output from coming out and ruin your skin. Moreover, constant leakage of the stool destroys the walls of the stoma and ileum. To keep your peristomal skin healthy, use the products that can prevent leakage, drink plenty of water to hydrate your skin, use medicated wipes to clean the skin around the opening, eat healthy food, empty your pouch on time, and wash your stoma. Protection of Stoma When it comes to caring for the stoma, there are several necessary points. Everything does matter for healthy stoma. An ileostomy patient should eat healthy to avoid loose motion, gas, odor, infection, blockage, and damage peristomal skin. For this purpose, the first thing is emptying your pouch on time. An ostomate should know when to empty the bag and when to replace it. Many ileostomies go through diarrhea and frequent bowel movement; thus, they should empty their pouches four to five times a day. Before emptying your pouch wash your hands, use a medicated soap or sanitizer. Use medicated wipes to clean your peristomal skin. You must drain your stoma bag when it gets half full or 1/3 full. Do not wait for oozing the content from the pouching system. Use a high-quality adhesive and skin barrier to avoid leakage. Keep your stoma healthy. An opening in the belly wall should not bleed. If you are experiencing this problem, do not go for self-medication, consult your ostomy specialist immediately. Do not ignore, redness, change in the size of the stoma, change in the color of the stoma, burning, or any other abnormal activity in the stoma and around it. Whenever you feel such characteristics in your opening, consult your doctor.
