They also conveyed meanings that pointed to the deepest foundations of a healthy political life. “Civility,” “politeness,” “civics,” and “citizenship” touch on areas of personal and communal formation that were expected to develop our political capacities. Could it be that the source of our political difficulties today stems from the disconnect of civility, liberal education, and even a common place from how we think about national politics?In this lecture, Professor Patrick Deneen explores the underlying connections between these two ancient words, indicating something shared and common. Can attentiveness to civility, liberal education, and the cultivation of local civic spaces begin to heal the rifts of our political life today? Amid these dark political times, we will search for signs of a new dawn. Patrick J. Deneen is Professor of Political Science and holds the David A. Potenziani Memorial College Chair of Constitutional Studies at the University of Notre Dame. His books include The Odyssey of Political Theory, Democratic Faith, Why Liberalism Failed, and a number of edited volumes. He lives in South Bend, IN. Dr. Mark David Hall is Herbert Hoover Distinguished Professor of Politics and Faculty Fellow in the Honors Program at George Fox University, Associated Faculty at the Center for the Study of Law and Religion at Emory University, and a Senior Fellow at Baylor University’s Institute for Studies of Religion. Mark has written, edited, or co-edited a dozen books, including Proclaim Liberty Throughout All the Land: How Christianity Has Advanced Liberty and Equality for All Americans (Fidelis Books, forthcoming). Dr. Bill Curtis, Professor of Political Science at the University of Portland, teaches courses on political theory/philosophy, the history of political thought, and Constitutional law. He is also the University of Portland’s Pre-Law Advisor and faculty advisor to the Mock Trial Team. He has published articles in academic journals such as: Political Theory, Contemporary Political Theory, and Contemporary Pragmatism. His book, Defending Rorty: Pragmatism and Liberal Virtue, was published by Cambridge University Press in 2015.Dr. Shon Neyland is the Senior Pastor of Highland Christian Center (HCC), Portland, Oregon. Dr. Neyland served 20 years as a Senior Pastor in a variety of capacities in the Air Force, including Command Chaplain for Pacific Air Forces, Command Chaplain for Air Fore Materiel Command, Deputy Commandant for the Chaplain Corps College, and as Chaplain Corps Deputy Chief of Plans and Programs in the Pentagon. He is the author of four books, including The Courage to Stand: A New America.
