Catalyzing conversations around safety, equity, and accountability that will help to foster community belonging between young people and CPD Chicago Youth Council for Police Accountability: We Are Able (a 501c3), in partnership with the Chicago Police Board and with support from the Chicago Community Trust, launched the Chicago Youth Council for Police Accountability (CYCPA) in 2021. Our mission is to spark a dialogue about policing issues in Chicago, empower young people from across the City to engage in the work of the Chicago Police Board, and amplify young people’s voices that have been historically underrepresented and underutilized. The CYCPA is comprised of 11 young people ages 16-25. Their work includes: • Attending and providing input into police board meetings • Researching and drafting policy recommendations that are presented to the board • Performing outreach and awareness-building to increase engagement with the police board, and • Facilitating community-building events that foster inclusive communities Notable panelists include: Jadine Chou – Chief Safety and Security Office at Chicago Public SchoolsGlen Brooks – Director of Community Policing at CPDGhian Foreman – President of the Chicago Police BoardJamie Kalven – Executive Director of the Invisible Institute Daniel Ash – Associate Vice President of Community Impact at The Chicago Community TrustAlexa James - CEO of National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) ChicagoJoe Ferguson - Former Inspector General for City of ChicagoIntended Outcomes for Attendees : • To foster relationships with like-minded young people and connect around issues they are passionate about • To obtain a deeper understanding and knowledge of policing policies and issues facing Chicago • To develop stronger connections with community organizations and find opportunities to get involved in programs/activities • To collectively think about action-oriented steps to engender a deeper sense of community belonging • To learn more about the work of the CYCPA and its efforts to increase equity, safety, and accountability throughout the City.
