Holiday Curfews Extended For Miami-Dade County Residents

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FL — Miami-Dade County residents have another reason to celebrate this holiday season: The countywide curfew has been extended to 1 a.m. on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava announced the temporary curfew relaxation in a video shared to her social media pages Thursday. The county curfew has been in place since the start of the coronavirus pandemic though its timeframe has been updated at various points. The curfew currently runs nightly from midnight to 6 a.m. As the holidays approached, she said she's been working closely with local leaders, businesses and residents and "listening carefully to the voices and feedback of people across our community." The curfew change will allow residents to "celebrate their holiday traditions, such as Midnight Mass," Levine Cava said. She also stressed that on New Year's Eve, Miami-Dade Police won't "stop people who are heading home safely, but they will be on the lookout for gatherings past 1 a.m." She added, "I understand that this is an important night for the businesses and the residents who want to celebrate the new year. However, I want to make sure our businesses are our partners and protecting people." Levine Cava also urged residents to celebrate safely during the holidays. This includes wearing face masks, social distancing, and washing and sanitizing their hands. "I know we're all looking forward to turning the page on 2020 into a brighter new year ahead, but we can only enter the new year strong if we stay together and stay safe," she said.
