MIAMI, FL — Each holiday season, Miami Police Department hosts "Shop with a Cop," a fun event where kids in need get paired up with a police officer and are allowed to pick out toys and other gifts. It's a favorite event of many members of the department, Maj. Albert Guerra said in a video shared on Twitter. This year's shopping spree took place Thursday at the Walmart located at 3200 NW 79th Street in Miami. The need has never been greater, Guerra added. Miami police and their community partners usually provide gifts for about 70 children every year. Between 120 and 130 children showed up at this year's event, he said. Each child was given a $100 Walmart gift card to purchase anything they wanted. "This year in particular has been extra special because a lot of families have been hurting, a lot of families have been struggling," he said. "So, we wanted to make sure that we brought a great, great event this year." Despite the overall success of the event, Sgt. Jerome Wilson had some loose ends to wrap up when it was done. During "Shop with a Cop," he partnered with 11-year-old Xavier. The boy had been hoping for a new bike, but there weren't any left by the time he went shopping. Though Xavier left with some other toys and goodies, and ultimately had a good time, Wilson knew he wanted to make it up to the boy. "I felt bad because I saw he was disappointed that there were no bikes," Wilson said in a second video shared on Twitter. He reached out to his community contacts and eventually found someone who had an extra bike. The sergeant surprised Xavier with the bike on Friday. He made quite the entrance, too, showing up at the boy's home with his police car siren blaring and the lights flashing. Xavier seemed excited about his new bike and Wilson shared a video from the surprise visit.
