Description
An open mic event featuring music, poetry, and stand-up comedy performances. Hosted by the winner of StandUp NBC 2021: Rene Vaca. EVENT DESCRIPTION This event, produced by Artivists United and co-presented with International Eye LA and Levitt Pavilion, presents a unique opportunity for nonprofit organizations and small businesses in South Central L.A. to interface and engage with artivists (artist-activists) during an afternoon of exciting ‘open mic’ performances featuring singers, rappers, poets, and comedians who will learn about the missions of local nonprofits. A panel discussion will open the event and set the framework followed by a short film screening by Artivists United. Artist performances will ensue and carry the bulk of the event time. Throughout the event, nonprofits will be tabling and attendees (particularly those who are artists) are encouraged to network with them with the intent of forming a partnership. EVENT OBJECTIVES Facilitating community partnerships Empowering artists Increasing capacity of nonprofits Entertainment Building community THEMES OF THE WORK This work sits squarely at the intersection of art and activism. Particularly, cultivating a community of artivists who are inspired to use their art for activism and have the accessibility to do so. This open mic event isn’t just for artists who plan to perform, but for any artists who have the desire to utilize their art for activism. A panel discussion with seasoned artivists and community leaders will open the event and ground the crowd with a discussion on the intersection of arts and activism. Local nonprofits, with a particular emphasis on those from South Central LA, will be tabling . There is an expressed intent for local artists to network with these nonprofits to form partnerships where artists can either volunteer or be paid to utilize their craft to help carry forth the mission of the nonprofits. There is no stipulation as to how these partnerships must look or operate. Potential organization/artist partnerships will be invited to a subsequent series of events where facilitators will help guide both parties in forming a mutually beneficial, effective partnership. To keep with the theme of artivism, local small business vendors whose businesses center around creativity/activism will be invited to table as well. Vendors from Mercado La Paloma will be selling food and beverages to keep attendees refreshed. Our event partner, Levitt LA will be offering a pop-up music experience as part of the WE RISE initiative to promote community wellness through the arts. This is part of Mental Health awareness month in May. Additional sponsors include CD9 -Office of Councilmember Curren D Price, Empowerment Congress Arts And Culture Committee, Public Allies and other community organizations.
