Description
The 21st all-ages DIY punk all-ages matinee fund raiser to support music education at Castelar in Chinatown. THE SHOW This series of fundraising concerts was started to support the underfunded music education program at Castelar School. Established in 1882 and sitting right in the middle of Chinatown, the inner-city public school serves mostly immigrant kids who don't get much exposure to performing arts or creative outlets. Chinatown has an unbeatable musical past (mostly punk) and rad art scene in the present (post punk). Neither subculture crosses paths often with the residents in Chinatown but we're trying to create a bridge for them to help out the local kids. Previous shows have included Adolescents, Alley Cats, Dils, Phranc, Alice Bag, PHAG (Phranc and Alice Bag), WÜRM, The Last, Channel 3, Mike Watt (with the Missingmen and Secondmen), Hector Penalosa (with Neko Neko, My Revenge, and Baja Bugs), Bob Forrest (solo and with the Bicycle Thief), The Crowd, Rikk Agnew Band, Chuck Dukowski Sextet, Midget Oddjob (with Keith Morris), California, Sean Wheeler & Zander Schloss (and Zander solo), Ford Madox Ford, Fur Dixon, Vulturas, LP3 & The Tragedy, Horseheads, Gitane Demone Quartet, Money Mark, Dengue Fever, Carsick Cars, Birdstriking, Chui Wan, Neptunas, Bombon, Bad Cop/Bad Cop, Upset, Rachel Haden, Rough Kids, Slaughterhouse, Otniel Y Los Condors, The Linda Lindas... A real nice mix of original L.A. punks and underground bands that carry on the tradition. Our twenty-first all-ages matinee was supposed to happen in May 2020, and feature friends the Neighborhood Brats, Rough Kids, and Linda LIndas, but was canceled due to the pandemic. Two years later, we bring you the show with a different lineup to raise some dough for the music program at Chinatown's neighborhood school––and maybe eat some delicious cookies and jump around to cool bands with family and friends. The bands: • Channel 3 - Posh Boy lifers who were on not only on key ROTR, Eastern Front, and Punk & Disorderly comps but continue to release ripping punk records to this day. They played our second show (with Money Mark and Hector Penalosa from The Zeros) and our thirteenth show (with the Neputunas, 16 Again, and John Curry from the Flyboys), but often come just to hang out and support! • Chip Kinman - The founding member of legendary punks The Dils, cowpunk originators Rank & File, and deconstructed fuzz pop masters Blackbird comes back for a fourth Save Music in Chinatown show. After playing maxed-out blues with Ford Madox Ford twice and making a splash with the reunited Dils, he will be previewing his new modular music as heard on a mind-blowing release from In The Red Records. • Bombon - The garage surf trio from San Pedro has released a cool EP and LP, and most recently appeared in the excellent Water Under the Bridge compilation, Spike. They were part of our eighth show (with The Crowd, Bad Cop Bad Cop, and Four Eyed Four), come to our shows just to hang out as well, and have connections to SMIC familia Mike Watt and Calimucho Screen Printing. • One more super surprise guest who will be familiar to all of our regulars. The price of admission is $20 for grownups and $10 for kids 13 and under. Sorry folks, everything is more expensive after the pandemic! But this is a benefit so everything goes to the cause. SCHEDULE TBA THE RAFFLE In addition to donating for admission, guests will be able to donate money toward raffle tickets for a chance to score prizes. $1 = 1 ticket. So far, and it's still early, prizes include the following: • Hard + Fast photo book by Melanie Nillson with Devo, Germs, and X/Go-Go's 7" singles • What I See Black Flag photo book signed by Glen E. Friedman • Personally crafted Strummer star from CH3's Mike Magrann • Vinyl and gear from Frontier Records • Art goodies from Hellen Jo • Gift certificates from Scoops Chinatown • Castelar gear, as worn by Adolescents, CH3, Hurry Up, Neptunas... • Save Music in Chinatown zines, and maybe even a T-shirt • More to come! Check this site regularly for additions as the show draws nearer, and contact us if you'd like to donate something cool to the cause! PARKING There is free metered parking on the streets (try going north on Broadway) and reasonably priced parking on College. MISC. All ticket proceeds minus Eventbrite surcharges will be donated directly to FACES (Friends and Alumni of Castelar Elementary School, a registered nonprofit organization) to be applied specifically to the music education program.
