Description
Join us to watch and learn from a live beehive inspection. Join us to watch and learn from a live beehive inspection. Our beekeeper, Tim Doherty, will open honeybee hives, pull out their frames, and explain what he’s observing and why it’s of note. We will also have “Feed the Bee” seeds (a.k.a. pollinator seeds) for folks to take home and plant in their own yards to support their local pollinator friends, as well as honey for sale from Tim’s own hives. The hives Tim is tending to were placed at this park last year in an effort to educate our community on the importance of bees to our ecosystem. Bees are vital for the preservation of ecological balance and biodiversity in nature. They provide one of the most recognizable ecosystem services: pollination, which makes food production possible. Most flowering plants on earth need help with pollination. It is estimated that one third of the food we consume relies on pollination, mainly by bees. Following the demonstration, all are welcome to continue enjoying their afternoon in the park with food, drinks, games, and other activities. About Tim & Doc’s: After being injured while serving in Afghanistan, Tim turned to beekeeping. He found it exciting and purposeful, and so he wanted to spread this gift to other veterans. This led him to start his own nonprofit organization, Doc’s Healing Hives, which provides training to veterans with the goal of helping them heal through the therapeutic power of beekeeping. About 684 Mountain Drive: Livable Buckhead is working to turn the plot of land located at 684 Mountain Drive into a community park. Over the past few years, we’ve planted trees there, added picnic benches painted with colorful murals, and have even introduced bee hives with a supporting pollinator garden. The bee habitat was created in partnership with Buckhead Rotary and Doc’s Healing Hives, a nonprofit that introduces veterans to beekeeping in an effort to help them heal through the experience of managing their own hives.
