Rain Postpones 'Revive I-5' Weekend Work

SEATTLE — Another round of spring rain scuttled plans to begin a lengthy roadwork project on southbound Interstate 5 in Seattle. The Washington State Department of Transportation had intended to begin work Friday evening and continue until Monday morning. Once the weather allows, WSDOT contractors will work to replace 35 aging and "bumpy" expansion joints along the freeway and 10 ramps between Spokane Street and Interstate 90. Officials said the work requires special polyester concrete to complete, which does not mix well with rain. Provided the weather cooperates, WSDOT plans to begin the work next weekend, reducing southbound lanes in the area beginning at 7:30 p.m. on May 13. During that time, and on upcoming weekends, southbound lane reductions will begin south of Interstate 90. "You probably have things to do next weekend but this project doesn't mean you're stuck at home," WSDOT wrote Friday. "If you must use this stretch of I-5, make a plan and allow extra time. You can also skip the roads and ride a train or let someone else handle the driving and take a bus." The project is part of "Revive I-5," and will continue on most weekends through the summer, except for major holidays. Learn more about the project online.
