MOUNT VERNON, NY — Schools are opening Thursday, but as of Wednesday the district's administration building is closed because a central office staffer tested positive for the coronavirus, News12 reported. The district office on North Columbus Avenue will be cleaned and sanitized before being reopened Monday, the cable news network reported. Mount Vernon changed to a remote-only school opening so that administrators can follow up with parents and guardians who have not chosen a learning model they prefer for their children — hybrid or fully remote. It will also allow the district time to implement all the necessary details for students and staff to return safely to the school buildings. Starting in October, children will be enrolled in whichever module parents have chosen. Parents have an opportunity on the first day of school to hear from the district during a Virtual Parent Learning Module scheduled for 6-7:30 p.m. on Thursday. The district will address safety practices and processes, virtual learning services, and physical distancing, cleaning and sanitizing in the classroom.
