PHOENIX, AZ — If you're looking to take home a new furry friend, now is the time to do it. Now through May 15, all adoption fees are waived at Arizona Humane Society.
As of earlier this week, the shelter had 1,000 pets in its care either at its shelters or in foster homes, according to the society's media relations specialist, Kelsey Dickerson.
One of the pets up for adoption through the humane society is Dolly, a 4-year-old black lab rescued in March when she was a sick stray.
"She underwent a double eye enucleation in our animal trauma hospital due to some medical issues but she has adjusted very well and is doing great," Dickerson said in a email.
This means that Dolly has had both of her eyeballs removed. Normally, Dolly's adoption fee would be $350 but it is currently waived thanks to the Bissell Pet Foundation's annual "Empty the Shelters" initiative.
Many shelters in Arizona are full to brimming, including the Arizona Animal Welfare League, which is also working with the Bissell Pet Foundation. Through this Sunday, adoption fees are waived for all pets that are one year and older and living at the league's main shelter in Phoenix
The Empty the Shelters initiative has helped more than 83,000 pets across the country find forever homes, according to the welfare league.
