MOUNT VERNON, NY — A Mount Vernon man has been indicted in the shooting death of another city resident in May. Negus Kirton, 37, was indicted in the May shooting death of Michael Toro. He was arraigned in Westchester County Court before Judge George Fufidio where he pleaded not guilty, Westchester County District Attorney Anthony A. Scarpino, Jr. announced. Mount Vernon Police arrested Kirton Oct. 2, five months after reports of shots fired brought them to Darling and Claremont avenues at 1:45 a.m. There they found a man with gunshot wounds in his head, back and arm. Michael Toro, 21, was pronounced dead at the scene. The two men knew each other, the DA said. Kirton faces charges of Murder in the Second Degree and Criminal Possession of a weapon in the Second Degree. Both are felonies. Bail had previously been set at $250,000 cash, $500,000 bond or $1.5 million partially secured bond. Kirton is due back in court Nov. 25.
