MOUNT VERNON, NY — A woman died and a firefighter was injured at a blaze on East Prospect Avenue Tuesday afternoon.
Mount Vernon firefighters were called at 4:55 p.m. to a two-alarm fire at 415 East Prospect Ave. They battled frigid 30-degree weather as well as the blaze, fire officials said.
The city's Office of Emergency Management established a warming station at a nearby home for the family of five.
City officials said the death of the 92-year-old woman was likely due to a combination of smoke inhalation and heat.
A Mount Vernon firefighter was injured falling down a flight of stairs while battling the blaze. He was taken to Mount Vernon Hospital, officials said.
"My condolences to the family during this holiday season to have lost a loved one," Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard said in an announcement about the fatal fire on Facebook.
