MONTAUK, NY —Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the popular Montauk "Fall Festival" has gone virtual this year. The virtual festival, presented by the Montauk Chamber of Commerce and traditionally held on Columbus Day weekend, kicked off Monday and runs through October 12. Members of the public can vote online for their favorite Montauk chowder, and then, enjoy a cup at one of the participating restaurants. This year, only the people judge instead of a panel of tasters, as has been the case in past years, the chamber said. "All non-profits such as the chamber were hit particularly hard this year," said Kay Tyler, executive director of the Montauk Chamber. "Montauk Fall Festival is our largest fundraiser, one that attracts hundreds of people. Anticipating that COVID-19 protocols would last through the year, we planned a virtual 'festival,' with key components that we hope will recoup some funds and be rewarding for the public." To enter the popular chowder contest online, individuals can purchase a 2020 Montauk chowder mug with a coupon for one free cup of chowder redeemable at one participating restaurant upon spending $10 or more. Enter here; this contest runs through November 15. Voting also enrolls individuals for the chance to win a $200 gift card of their choice at one the participating restaurants. Also available for purchase online or at the chamber office are "Cash Catch" tickets, Chinese auction tickets, sweatshirts and more. Also new this year is the chance to bid online for most of the silent auction items during the week of October 5, including Montauk Getaway packages, celebrity memorabilia, a "Duryea's VIP Dinner", and more. Winners will be announced October 12. Proceeds benefit the Montauk Chamber "to stimulate the growth and development of the local community and economy to and contribute to a variety of charitable groups," organizers said.
