EPA Plans Olin Superfund Site Flyover Survey

WILMINGTON, MA — Olin Corporation will conduct a flyover survey of the Maple Meadow Brook wetlands in Wilmington the week of Nov. 9 or Nov. 16, the Environmental Protection Agency said Monday. The survey is designed to get data on contamination of the bedrock beneath the wetlands, as part of investigation into the Olin Chemical Superfund Site. A helicopter with "a large dipole instrument" will conduct an electromagnetic survey. The EPA is overseeing the Olin survey. The dipole instrument is the "best and safest tool to analyze the wetland area," the agency said in a news release. The survey will take about two hours, but may require multiple flights to get quality data. It will cover about 250 acres and the helicopter will fly low, which will be noisy.
