WILMINGTON, MA — President Trump's loss in Massachusetts on Tuesday was in line with his performance in 2016. With two-thirds of estimated votes reporting, his share of the vote has fallen from 33 percent to 31 percent. So how did Trump's support in Wilmington compare with his vote totals in 2016, when he was running against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton? According to unofficial results from the town clerk, Trump picked up votes in Wilmington in 2020, but lost vote share. In 2016, he earned 6,167 votes in town, compared to 6,394 votes in 2020. He won 47.0 percent in 2016 and 43.3 percent in 2020, in line with the statewide trend. Not every community in Middlesex County broke for Biden. Trump squeaked out wins in Ashby and Dracut, where he bested Biden by a mere 110 votes, according to unofficial results. Tuesday's vote climaxed a heated battle for control of the White House, unfolding during a pandemic that killed nearly a quarter of a million Americans before Election Day. As of Wednesday afternoon, the election remained too close to call, with multiple key states still counting votes.
